Hugo Maguey was a founding member of El Universal online in 2000, and Excelsior online in 2007. He also led the creation of Pajaro Politico, a political and news-based twitter account that led to the creation of the award-winning Animal Politico website in 2009, one of the most influential news sites in Mexico, and the country’s first web-based political news outlet. Maguey served as general editor of Animal Political for four years. After leaving Animal Politico, Maguey worked for the U.S. State Department as a social media specialist at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City. While working for the U.S. State Department, Maguey developed and led the social media strategy for the opening of the U.S. Embassy in Havana, Cuba, in 2015, and for President Barack Obama’s visit to Havana in 2016.
