Rodrigo Aguilar

Rodrigo Aguilar was born in Mexico City, and became an U.S. citizen through naturalization on February 8, 2017, three weeks after President Donald Trump took office.

Aguilar, who is of Spanish, Swiss, Basque, Huasteco and Mexican ancestry, has lived and worked in various cities around the world including: Monterrey, Guadalajara, Mexico City, London and Washington, D.C.  Aguilar received a Master of Science degree in International Political Economy at the London School of Economics and Political Sciences. His thesis was “New Energy Diplomacy in Developing Countries: Foreign energy policy formulation in Mexico under NAFTA and the role of national interest.” 

From 2000 to 2002, he was the director of strategic planning for the Mexican Ministry of Energy, where he led technical projects for the first North American Energy Working Group, a presidential initiative created by President George W. Bush,  President Vicente Fox and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. In 2007, Aguilar was hired by The Washington Center, a Washington, D.C. – based nonprofit organization, to lead a project focused on bringing together young public servants from the United States, Canada and Mexico to work on common interests regarding trade and foreign policy. 

In 2012, Aguilar started Wiljan Consulting LLC, a Washington D.C.- based political, business and legal consulting firm. Aguilar provides advice and analysis regarding Mexican policy for the firm’s U.S. clients, as well as strategic planning for their crossover operations and investments in Mexico. Rodrigo Aguilar lives in Bethesda, Maryland, and considers himself a proud member of the binational community.
